The LAR Story

40 years of trusted service

LAR came into existence in 1980 in Montreal Qc. A distribution center was created for product inventory for a very limited band of individual car dealers who formed a small buying group in order to secure and benefit from better volume discounts for their needs. With their objective of being more competitive, they joined together and became reunited buyers.

In Quebec, these francophone auto dealers became “Reunited Buyers” (Les Acheteurs Reunis), and the acronym for this -LAR- became known as the company’s name. Subsequently, the company leveraged this 3-letter acronym to better communicate its leadership in being a top resource for auto dealers, and Leader Auto Resources became its official name.

In its first year of operation LAR had $1.3 million in sales. Growth was consistently exponential, with new dealers, suppliers and members joining every year. By 2010, over 25 dealer-members received at least $1 million in additional rebates from the products and services that they purchased.

LAR offers discounts on virtually everything needed to run a dealership and associated body-shop and has become the largest paint distributing Cooperative in North America. By 2019, LAR had recorded over $3.8 Billion dollars in sales transactions since inception.

Continuous Expansion – U.S Growth

In 2020, Leader Auto Resources (LAR) in Montreal and Resilience Capital Partners, a Cleveland-based private equity firm, announced they will partner to expand LAR’s auto dealership sourcing and service business in the U.S. with the objective of catapulting expansion. Through the investment by Resilience Capital, LAR’s existing U.S. business has been rebranded as DealerShop headquartered in Michigan and has been provided the capital and expertise to support virtually everything a dealer needs to effectively run its business.
